The short answer
Required eligible turnover = wagering base × multiplier. A 40× condition applied to a 25-unit bonus means 1,000 units of eligible stakes, not a 1,000-unit deposit and not a prediction of losses.
Identify the amount being multiplied
Suppose a fictional offer adds 25 bonus units to a 25-unit deposit. If 40× applies only to the bonus, the calculation is 25 × 40 = 1,000. If it applies to deposit plus bonus, it becomes 50 × 40 = 2,000.
These examples use the same multiplier and account balance but produce different requirements. Look for the exact definition of the wagering base instead of relying on the promotional banner.
Compare sticky and non-sticky balance treatmentTurnover is cumulative stakes
Ten eligible bets of 2 units create 20 units of turnover. That does not mean you deposited 20 or lost 20: the outcomes determine the balance left after those bets.
You may lose the available balance before a requirement is met. The calculation describes a condition, not a recommendation to keep playing or add more funds.
Check the constraints around the number
The wagering meter does not explain everything. Compare the time remaining, eligible games and maximum permitted wager with the written conditions. If any of those are unclear, get a specific answer before using the promotion.

Is 40× wagering the same as losing forty times the bonus?
No. It describes eligible stakes. Actual losses or winnings depend on outcomes, and the balance may run out before completion.
Can I use the calculation for any currency?
Yes, if all amounts use the same unit and the terms define that unit. Do not mix a BTC base with a fiat-currency balance.
