The short answer
Trace the fund order, winnings attribution, wagering base and cancellation outcome. A sticky bonus commonly remains attached while active; a non-sticky offer commonly separates deposited and promotional balances more clearly. Neither label is a complete guarantee.
Treat the label as a starting point
A sticky bonus commonly remains attached to the account while the promotion is active. The credit itself may never become withdrawable, or it may be removed at a defined event even after wagering is completed. The terms can also restrict how deposited funds, bonus funds and related winnings are used.
A non-sticky bonus commonly keeps the deposited balance and promotional balance more separate. Deposited funds may be used first, with the bonus activated or consumed only after another event. Some offers let a player withdraw an eligible cash balance and forfeit the unused bonus; others apply different consequences.
These are patterns, not standard definitions. Non-sticky does not automatically mean instant withdrawal, no identity checks or unrestricted cash. Sticky does not say whether the bonus, the winnings or both are removed.
Compare accepting a bonus with playing cash onlyFollow three balances separately
Write down the deposited amount, bonus credit and winnings as separate rows. Do not merge them into one total simply because the account shows one headline balance.
Winnings need their own row because their treatment may depend on the money used for the wager. A win funded by deposited cash can be treated differently from a win funded by promotional credit. A mixed wager can require a proportional or operator-specific calculation.
- Can this balance be withdrawn now?
- Which wagering and play restrictions apply?
- What happens on cancellation, expiry or withdrawal?
- Which event moves the funds into another balance category?
Check what a sticky arrangement keeps attached
Imagine a fictional offer with a 50-unit deposit and 50 units of promotional credit. The account may display 100 units, but the terms might keep the 50-unit bonus attached until a stated completion, cancellation or withdrawal event.
If the account total increases after a win, that still does not prove the whole amount is eligible for withdrawal. Ask whether the bonus can ever be withdrawn, whether deposited funds remain available and what remains after the wagering meter reaches zero.
- Does a withdrawal request cancel the promotion?
- Does cancellation remove bonus-related winnings?
- Does the original bonus convert, remain restricted or disappear?
- Does a promotional cash-out cap continue after wagering?
Confirm how a non-sticky arrangement is staged
In another fictional 50-unit deposit plus 50-unit bonus, the operator may deduct early wagers from the deposited balance first. If that balance grows, an eligible amount may be withdrawable while the unused bonus is abandoned; if it is exhausted, the account may move into a bonus-funded stage.
That is one possible structure, not a universal definition. Confirm the fund order, whether winnings follow their funding balance, when the bonus stage begins and whether a withdrawal cancels the unused promotion.
Do not call an offer risk-free because cash is used before bonus credit. Deposited money can still be lost, outcomes remain uncertain and the promotion can contain deadlines and play restrictions.
Compare the same event across both models
Hold the deposit and intended session limit constant. Then ask what happens after the same event instead of comparing two headline balances.
Suppose each fictional offer starts with a 40-unit deposit and 40 bonus units. After several wagers, the screen shows 55 units in total. Do not invent the eligible amount: copy the result from the exact terms or obtain a written answer tied to the account and offer.
- Withdraw now: what is eligible, cancelled or forfeited?
- Cancel now: which deposited funds and winnings remain?
- Deposit balance reaches zero: does a new bonus stage begin?
- Wagering reaches zero: does the credit convert or disappear?
- Promotion expires: which balances and winnings are removed?
Separate wagering from balance treatment
The wagering requirement describes eligible turnover. It does not by itself explain which balance is used first or what survives a cancellation.
For a fictional 40-unit bonus at 30× bonus-only wagering, required eligible turnover is 1,200 units. If 30× instead applies to the 40-unit deposit plus 40-unit bonus, it is 2,400. Neither result says whether the promotion is sticky or which winnings are restricted.
Check the wagering base, fund order and withdrawal clauses as separate fields. A balance model also does not remove a per-wager limit.
Calculate the wagering requirement separatelyCheck the maximum-bet rule separatelyTreat cancellation as a balance decision
Do not press a cancellation or withdrawal button merely to discover what it does. Record the balances first and ask what would remain if the action were confirmed.
Save the promotion name, applicable terms, account currency and time of any support response. If the operator cannot explain the outcome clearly, stop using the promotion rather than increasing play to resolve the uncertainty.
Location and licence can change the baseline
Rules differ by jurisdiction and licence. For Great Britain–licensed online gambling, current Gambling Commission guidance says deposit and bonus balances must be displayed separately and players must be allowed to withdraw their deposit balance, subject to general regulatory obligations.
The same guidance says promotional restrictions should not apply to play with the deposit balance unless software prevents a player from breaching them. This is a jurisdiction-specific baseline, not a global definition of non-sticky and not a statement about an operator without a British licence.
Check the licence and rules that actually govern the account. Do not use one jurisdiction’s protections to interpret every casino promotion.
Use a pre-acceptance checklist
Capture these answers before accepting a bonus. Terms and availability can change by location and account, so recheck the original operator page before relying on any offer detail.
Markzino is an affiliate publisher, not a casino operator. A bonus is not guaranteed cash or a reason to deposit more, raise a stake or extend a session.
- Are deposit, bonus and winnings balances shown separately?
- Which balance funds the first wager, and how are winnings attributed?
- What amount is multiplied by the wagering requirement?
- What maximum bet, game exclusions and contribution rates apply?
- What happens on cancellation, withdrawal and expiry?
- Which location, licence and promotion-specific terms apply?
Common questions
Is a non-sticky bonus always better?
No. It may separate deposited and promotional balances more clearly, but fund order, wagering, expiry, withdrawal rights and winnings treatment still decide the practical result.
Can I withdraw my deposit without losing the bonus?
Do not assume so. Check the promotion terms and applicable rules, then ask what happens to every balance before confirming a withdrawal.
Does completing wagering make the whole balance cash?
Not necessarily. A cash-out cap, removal of the original bonus, identity checks or another condition may still apply.
Does cash first mean there are no bonus restrictions yet?
Not automatically. Some offers apply restrictions whenever a promotion is active; others separate the stages. Confirm the active rules.
Are sticky and non-sticky legal definitions?
Treat them as informal industry labels. The promotion contract and applicable regulatory rules determine the actual balance and withdrawal treatment.
